Copy Tip of the Week
Today’s copywriting hack comes from a 2-minute video the Copyhackers team put together on 5 Value Prop Formulas You Can Use to Write Killer Headlines.
Here are all of their killer headline formulas. Watch the video to learn how to employ them.
You Want _______.
Change/Transform/Turn [thing they have] into [thing they want]
[Desirable outcome from product] from [no-brainer makers]
The [adjective] [noun] for [primary use case]
The [adjective] way for [segment] to [action or outcome] so you can [benefit]
Put one of these formulas to work next time you’re stuck on how to write a headline (or subheadline) for your next email campaign!
Must-Read Articles
As an elder millennial, I can remember 15+ years ago when older adults were trying to characterize and define my generation. “You’re all the same,” they’d say, “You like XYZ.” Nothing was further from the truth, and as a result, a lot of marketing missed the mark. But if you shift your focus from stereotypes to subcultures, you’re more likely to hit your target.
Customer Retention Strategies for Brands (Klaviyo)
There’s no doubt “retention” is a buzzword in DTC circles these days. But that’s for good reason. Learn why that is and some strategies you can employ with your clients to keep customers around for much longer. Also, shout out to my friend Jacob Sappington for his insights in this article.
Personality vs. Personalization (Inbox Collective)
“Personality is all about you and your voice. Personalization is about a reader’s interests or needs.” Want to know how to do both well in your next email campaign? Read on, padawan.
Pretty Fly Copy
I love good copy. You love good copy. We all saw a lot of good copy this week. But here are a few highlights from yours truly:
[Email] Away
I love it when email copy plays on a consistent theme. This one? Travel. From the subject line to the body copy, they got this one in the bag. (Get it?)
[Ad] Atari
Not gonna lie, this headline stopped me in my tracks. It was awful, but it did catch my eye and got me to read the rest of the ad. I like the way they bolded the core value props for quick reference. Also, why did Stevie Wonder agree to this??
[Billboard] Chipotle
Proof that what you emphasize is just as important as what you don’t.
[Email] California Beach Co.
The ONLY thing I like about this email is the subject line. It’s an indirect reference to their product that’s on sale (Pop ’N Go Playpen). Don’t get me started on the god-awful design…
