Must-Read Articles
Conversion Copywriting (via Kevan Lee)
Why I recommend it: What is conversion copywriting exactly? That’s the point Kevan’s here to make. In general, he argues, the art of copywriting needs a rebrand. I love the simplicity of his definitions and how he does what all writers know needs to happen – advocating for all good copywriting to be rooted in the story.
‘Treat Yourself’ Culture: Here’s What the Numbers Say (via Marketing Dive)
Why I recommend it: Now that the holidays are a reasonable distance behind us, it’s worth asking: What did spending habits look like? Now that the dust has settled on the data, it’s pointing to an interesting picture. Consumers spent a lot of money on themselves. What does that mean for seasonal messaging this upcoming holiday season? Marketing Dive explains.
Let’s Talk About Consent and the Future of Permission-Based Marketing (via AdWeek)
Why I recommend it: When I first entered the marketing world, I quickly stumbled upon Seth Godin. He staunchly advocated for a permission-based approach to marketing – an approach I readily adopted myself. This article is a great defense for why preserving consumer agency in even the most subtle marketing efforts is important to cultivating trust. Next time you sit down to write copy for a pop-up, consider this.
Pretty Fly Copy
THE SILL
Format: Email
Why I like it: I love these quiz-type of emails. They’re an effective way of taking a customer on a “micro journey.” And if you play your cards right, a great opportunity for getting some zero-party data.
CALDERA + LAB
Format: Email
Why I like it: From the subject line, to the preview line, and headline, this follows a PAS framework to a T. The images and social proof also reinforce the product's effectiveness. (FWIW, from my experience, this product genuinely works.)
SOLO STOVE
Format: Email
Why I like it: Those silly “holidays” on the calendar? This is a great example of how to do it well. The theme keeps the message and product features aligned. And strategically, I like that they sent this out ahead of Pi Day so their customers can get equipped.
HEXCLAD
Format: Email
Why I like it: I felt like this was a tasteful (pun intended) feature for Black History Month. Love the subject line, headline, and CTA button copy especially. Also like that the body copy above the final CTA ties the story element back together. A good bookend.
BRIGHTLAND
Format: Email
Spotted by: Alexa Rome, Junior Copywriter & Content Strategist, Homestead
Why I like it: Dead simple, great review, and then a bunch of recommendations for gifting.
SUPER SHAPER BUNS BRIEFS
Format: Direct Response Print Ad
Why I like it: Old direct response ads are a great place to observe direct response copywriting strategies in full view. The headline is eye-catching and the benefits and value props are clear.
