Your sentences are too long.
Some copywriters think longer sentences sound more professional. But your reader's brain disagrees.
Your brain can only juggle about 7 things at once before it gets overwhelmed.
Every clause, prepositional phrase, and dependent thought adds another ball to juggle.
When you write: "Our premium skincare serum, which has been carefully formulated with organic ingredients sourced from sustainable farms and tested by dermatologists, helps reduce fine lines while hydrating your skin and restoring its natural glow for a more youthful appearance."
Your reader's brain does this: processing... processing... wait, what were we talking about?
But when you write: "This serum erases fine lines. It hydrates deeply. Your skin glows."
Their brain does this: Got it. Got it. Got it.
Cognitive load theory shows that complex sentences force readers to hold multiple ideas in their working memory simultaneously. Most people can't do this effectively.
The result is mental fatigue, confusion, and ultimately, abandonment.
There is an exception though. Sometimes complexity builds credibility.
When writing for technical audiences or explaining complex processes, longer sentences can demonstrate expertise. The key is earned complexity – using it intentionally, not accidentally.
So, start simple. Add complexity only when it serves your reader's understanding, not your ego.
Short sentences work. They're clear. They convert.

Must-Read Articles
This Edit Mistakes is Killing Your CTR (via The Playbook)
Why I recommend it 👉 While this is directly applicable to video editors, it’s just as relevant to any marketer who’s trying to grab their target audience’s attention. This line is a banger: “Speed grabs attention. But tempo earns trust.”
Stay Strong: Never Let AI Fill Your Blank Page (via Animalz)
Why I recommend it 👉 Tim Metz refers to AI throughout this article as “The Button.” In many ways, he calls it a shortcut to “creativity.” But there’s a danger present – it may not be freeing up your creative energy at all. This is a fantastic thought-piece that encourages us to think critically about how we’re utilizing AI in our writing process. To be clear, he’s not against it. But he argues there’s a specific point in your creative process you should avoid it altogether.
Why Zero-Click Marketing is the New Normal (via Holistic Email Marketing)
Why I recommend it 👉 The way we consume information is shifting – not only because of AI, but because of how algorithms prioritize on-platform content versus content that redirects elsewhere. In other words, we’re not optimizing just for clicks anymore (particularly via email) –we’re optimizing our messages for far more.

Why I recommend it 👉 This podcast goes beyond speed to show how AI becomes a creative collaborator for eCommerce marketers. The hosts explore how AI tools enable faster prototyping and visualization, helping you bring ideas to life quickly. They also discuss "liquid content" - the concept of creating personalized, customizable stories based on user context, which opens massive opportunities for tailored marketing.
More importantly, this isn't about replacing human creativity. It's about using AI as a collaborative amplifier to enhance your flow state while keeping YOU at the center of the marketing process.

Why I like it 👉 Admittedly, this is a bit dark and twisted. But I couldn’t look away? I legit watched this three times. Talk about throwing in some hooks.
BREZ
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 When you give people options, the power of choice can be overwhelming. An easy way around that is to offer pre-made bundles. This campaign is a great way to do that while offering a bit of a peek behind the scenes.
MARS MEN
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 The subject line was the perfect insult. So was the line “focus on not being the family disappointment.” Perfect email to a man who fears he has low T. And it made me LOL.
TAILWIND NUTRITION
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 I really love how the headline flowed right into the CTA (the arrow helped reinforce the point). I also love how the social proof supports the overall angle of the email.

Why I like it 👉 There were so many cheesy dad-approved jokes in here. I couldn’t handle it, haha!
