Copy Tip of the Week
Today’s tip is a little less “tip like” and more of an insight. I read this nugget from Marty Cooke a couple of weeks ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. Here it is:
Writing Is Thinking or, Fishing Where The Fish Are.
Good copywriting has always been good thinking…
Copywriters are still in the business of big ideas. And writing is still thinking.
But the final result may no longer contain any words at all. The thinking is as rigorous and inspired as ever. But the result might be a rubber wristband or a Big Urban Game.
Our job is, and always will be, to forge an emotional connection with people that motivates them to engage with a brand. Print, television, radio and outdoor are still powerful ways to do that. But as people migrate online, offline or avoid media altogether, copywriters have to go with them.
We have to fish where the fish are.
Microsites, games, viral videos, mobile apps and social media are the latest lures in the copywriter’s tackle box. The copywriter must be as adept at creating stunts and movements as headlines and taglines. Sometimes they job of perfecting a piece of copy (now often pretentiously called “content”) is replaced with figuring out how to get consumers to create the content for you. It takes a secure ego and a damned good idea to relinquish control to the masses.
… Is it still writing if no one sees your words? Is it still writing if you didn’t even write the words? Does it even matter?
As long as there’s creative thinking to be done, there’ll be copywriters around to do it.

Pretty Fly Copy
MAGIC MIND
Format: Post Purchase Email
Why I like it 👉 This was a great post purchase email all about expectation-setting – it also creates anticipation for the customer to receive their product and start experiencing the benefits. I think this is a great strategy more supplement brands need to adopt. I don’t see it enough.
DOUBLE WOOD SUPPLEMENTS
Format: Sale Email
Why I like it 👉 Categories that align with NY goals. There are a whole lot of “new year, new you” emails in my inbox – but this one stood out for one reason: it invited me to supplement my goals with their supplements. Not only is this a great way to feature product categories, it’s a great way to snag zero-party data to inform segmentation on future campaigns.
HUG SLEEP
Format: Email
Why I like it 👉 If your brand’s products qualify for HSA/FSA benefits, the end of the year is a great time to spotlight it. I loved this Hug Sleep campaign for that reason along. The copy frames the benefits of deep sleep while also adding a relevant sense of urgency to acting now. Plus, the CTA was simple and focused on one action.
