Copy Tip of the Week
Shock the system.
Ever hear of habituation? It’s when you get so used to something in your environment, you stop seeing it, hearing it, or noticing it.
You observe this a lot in your inbox. Your IG feeds. Your daily commute. Advances from that one guy at the gym.
The good news is you can help snap your audiences out of it with a pattern interrupt.
A shocking subject line.
A completely unhinged email.
A plain text campaign when you only send image-based ones.
A static ad with one word (that’s it).
A direct mail campaign instead of a typical email flow.
A new hairstyle that turns the gym guy off.
Don’t get me wrong. Habituation can be a good thing, but it’s also an easy way for you to eventually go unnoticed.
Keep your audience on their toes, bud.

Must-Read Articles
September BFCM Checklist: 3 Steps to Take (via Klaviyo)
Why I recommend it: Black Friday / Cyber Monday is right around the corner and now is the time to start preparing for it! Klaviyo broke down 3 (fairly simple) things you can begin doing this month to prep your email list for the holiday sale season.
Content Mapping for Customer Journeys (via Practice Ecommerce)
Why I recommend it: I touched on this in other newsletters before, but sometimes, it helps to read something a different way in order for it to stick. Content mapping matches marketing messages to different stages in a shopper's online buying journey. By identifying content gaps and engaging customers strategically, a comprehensive story can be developed to guide shoppers through their experience with your brand.
How to Use Psychology to Get Customers to Take Your Surveys (via ProProfs)
Why I recommend it: Zero-party data can be crucial for not only segmenting your email lists (or ad campaigns) effectively, but for creating targeted messaging for your audience too. While surveys are a fantastic way to collect this info, it’s not always easy to get customers to take them. This article? It has 17 ways you can leverage sCiEnCE to get responses!
BRAIN DRIVEN BRANDS
Lift Revenue by 13.5% Using This One Weird Psychology Tactic
⏰ 23 minutes
Why I recommend it: Direct mail. It’s an often overlooked revenue “channel” for most DTC brands, but it turns out, it’s a great way to acquire customers (and it’s a lot more cost-effective than an endless stream of Facebook ads). In fact, Ariyh has an article about this here.
Pretty Fly Copy
HURON
Format: Email
Why I like it: This is a part of Huron’s welcome flow. I like the listicle format introducing a product category (not a specific product). It’s easy to read and weaves together a bit of the brand story alongside selling points.
RUGGABLE
Format: Email
Why I like it: There’s nothing like sending an email about your best seller without actually telling me about your best seller. I love that their campaigns so routinely lean on both simplicity and curiosity to drive the click.
BRAXLEY
Format: Email
Why I like it: If you sell products in a crowded market, you need to effectively differentiate yourself from the pack – that’s what this email is about. I appreciated the written and visual elements, as well as the “trending” section to make it a bit more clickable.
IMPRINT
Format: IG Ad
Why I like it: It’s the perfect blend of a big promise (transform your mind in 30 days) and desire (… and become the most interesting person in the room). The comparison to Duolingo is 🤌🏼 as well, as it communicates the ease of the app.
UPROOT
Format: Email
Spotted By: Alexa Rome, Copywriter & Content Strategist, Homestead Studio
Why she likes it: It’s funny, but accessible, and timely — reminding the customer of something they may not be thinking about but are definitely worried about
