Must-Read Articles
How Your Backstory Affects Your Brand’s Writing Style (via Grace Baldwin)
Why I recommend it: I always say if you understand the core principles of copywriting, then you can write across any niche or genre. I still stand by that. Grace’s glimpse into adopting defined linguistic ecosystems as a way to increase your brand’s personality, well – it’s a must-read for anybody. There’s a great writing tip included here to boot!
8 Effective Ways to Use Social Proof (via Selzy)
Why I recommend it: While this article might be specific to email marketing, several of these strategies can be applied to ad copy as well. Many brands struggle to utilize social proof strategically, let alone well. Incorporate one of these into your next campaign.
How the Mere Exposure Effect Works in Marketing and Advertising (via Built In)
Why I recommend it: Can simply being exposed to something affect your opinion of it for the better? Science says, yes. It’s called the “Mere Exposure Effect” and it turns out maybe spending money on retargeting efforts is genuinely worthwhile. Read on to learn more…
DTC PODCAST
EPISODE #432: The Funnel is Dead - Introducing the TORNADO
⏰ 30 minutes
Why I recommend it: Want to get into the mind of your ideal client? Cherene Aubert has been all over the podcast world lately sharing what they’re working on at ILIA, what she learned in her time with Bobbie, and more. As a marketer in the DTC space, it’s important to understand what your clients are thinking, the metrics they’re focused on, and how you can position yourself to be a partner in helping them achieve their goals. This interview does just that.
Pretty Fly Copy
LIQUID DEATH
Format: Email
Why I like it: Abandonment emails can be tricky to write, to break through the noise of the same exact thing everyone else is sending. In this flow, Liquid Death breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to the reader. It’s a great way to grab attention.
BANDIT RUNNING
Format: Instagram Ad
Why I like it: Thing is… I don’t like it? But it’s a pattern interrupt. Not a visual you typically see in your Instagram feed: a female athlete blowing snot out her nostril.
SURREAL
Format: Email
Why I like it: Another abandonment email (browse, maybe?). First, I liked the headline. It was a great play on words. Second, I like how they grab you with a question (e.g. “What are you doing for breakfast?”). Third, I like how their chosen value props (e.g. “High protein, low carb, zero grams of sugar”) stand in contrast to the named breakfast foods. And fourth, their CTAS are perfect (e.g. “Feed Me” and “Eat Me”).
RIFLE PAPER CO.
Format: Email
Spotted By: Bailey Baethge, Senior Copywriter & Creative Strategist, Homestead
Why I like it: I love this GIF and the editorial layout.
SOLO STOVE
Format: Email
Spotted By: Jon Fox, Senior Account Manager, Homestead
Why I like it: What a subject line. And it’s hard not to read it in Snoop’s voice.
