Copy Tip of the Week
Today’s copy tip comes from Hey Whipple, Squeeze This by Luke Sullivan. It’s a great reminder about where to put the emphasis in your marketing:
Avoid style. Focus on substance. Remember, styles change; typefaces and design and art direction, they all change. Fads come and go. But people are always people. They want to look better, make more money, feel better, be healthy. They want security, attention, and achievement. These things about people aren't likely to change. So, focus your efforts on speaking to these basic needs, rather than tinkering with the current visual affectations.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Must-Read Articles
How to Market with a Small Product Line (via Klaviyo)
Why I recommend it: One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced working with some of our brands: they have a terribly small product line. In some cases, they only have one product. But that doesn’t mean your marketing has to be bland and redundant. Klaviyo packaged together 6 tips to keep your content fresh and engaging!
5 timeless principles for crafting razor-sharp marketing copy (via Action Rocket)
Why I recommend it: Nicole Holden (the author) won me over with this line I repeat numerous times every week: “core principles never go out of style.” It’s true. And if you’re still fairly new to the world of copywriting, these are worth pinning beneath your monitor on a little sticky note.
How to Improve Your Microcopy: UX Writing Tips for Non-UX Writers (via Smashing Magazine)
Why I recommend it: You might be thinking what the hell is microcopy? Think of it as things like titles, button copy, and the like. In fact, in eCommerce, websites, landing pages, and checkout pages are loaded with microcopy. Turns out, tried-and-true UX copy practices are good copywriting rules in general.
DTC Podcast EPISODE 421:
How to Grow Your Top of Funnel with Humor, Controversy, and Drops
⏰ 32 minutes
Why I recommend it: Simply put, it’s great insight into different strategies for grabbing your prospects’ attention. The DTC Podcast is operated by Pilothouse, an agency in a similar vertical as our own. You’ve probably seen a lot of these strategies in play while scrolling through Instagram and TikTok.
Pretty Fly Copy
ANA LUISA
Format: Email
Why I like it: They featured 27 products in this email with a simple GIF/hero image. And both the subject line and headline were simple and playful. Easy wins.
UPROOT CLEAN
Format: Email
Why I like it: Good marketers think about where their messages will intersect with their audience. On the subway? The interstate? While waiting in line at QuickTrip? Doomscrolling while doing ‘paperwork’? There are two CTAs in this email and the second one is “You can literally score the best deal of your life while sitting on the toilet. What a time to be alive.” These guys nailed it.
HEXCLAD
Format: Email
Why I like it: I absolutely HATE “up to XX% off” sales. They’re gimmicky. I wrote about it here. Turns out, HexClad worked their way around it. Mad props.
WESTERN RISE
Format: Email
Why I like it: The theme: Paris. They set you up with a beautiful quote from Anthony Bourdain and build the rest of their email around it. While this is copy-heavy, I admire the angle. Everything ties into the Parisian theme.
