How to Create Interest (via Eddie Shleyner)
John calls this hook-searching process “sales detective work” because the most compelling marketing stories are often inconspicuous. They’re hiding, touched away—and as copywriters, we must find them.

Must-Read Articles
How Email Exclusivity Drives Customer Retention and Lifetime Value (via Benchmark)
Why I recommend it: How do you keep customers engaged, satisfied, and connected to a brand long-term? Answer: email exclusive benefits. This is worth considering right now, especially as many brands try to weather the summer DTC slump.
Digits Convert Higher Than Words (via Nick Kolenda)
Why I recommend it: Which is better: ten or 10? Whether you’re writing numerals in ads or emails, it turns out there is a correct answer, especially if your intent is to be persuasive.
15 Principles for Managing Up (via Wes Kao)
Why I recommend it: If you haven’t subscribed to Wes Kao’s newsletter yet, do yourself a favor and click here. Her insights are just as relevant for contributors and strategic doers as much as they are for “managers” and “leaders.” This article is a perfect example of that. If you want more ways to move the needle on priority projects that, on some level require manager approval, give this a read.
Podcast Pick of the Week 🎙️
A Change of Brand
S3E1: Formula 1
Why I recommend it: Are you a Formula 1 fan? Then you’ve got to listen to this episode! One of the things I love about this particular deep-dive is that Blake Howard (Matchstic, Founder) focuses less on F1’s design rebrand (which was significant in 2017), but more so on their verbal rebrand. It’s great insight into how words can play a pivotal role in shaping a brand and the public’s response to it!
Pretty Fly Copy
MINDJOURNAL
Format: Email
Why I like it: I liked this email for two reasons. 1) The subject line was great and definitely curiosity-inducing. 2) The way they presented the social proof. In particular, I like the fade on the bottom review that leads to the CTA. Not to mention, there are other layers of social proof layered throughout this email. Well done.
HOLLOW
Format: Email
Why I like it: It’s a bare bones new product announcement that hits all of the necessary highlights: New product name > Benefits > Value Props > Urgency > CTA.
HEDLEY & BENNETT
Format: Email
Why I like it: Subject line = an immediate benefit. Hero = context-setting (i.e. Father’s Day) + reinforces the immediate benefit. Body = showcases (brilliantly, I might add) bundles relevant to the context. Sharp, clean, and awesome.
VINTERIOR
Format: Billboard
Why I like it: You read this and immediately know the big box store they’re referencing without naming directly. They’re naming benefits without actually naming benefits. Quite clever.
