Copy Tip of the Week
Be Lazy (to Avoid Redundancies)
It’s a bad habit many copywriters carry over from college in an attempt to reach page limits (hey – I did it too). But why say the same thing twice?
Ex. 1 (w/ redundancy): "Each and every person in attendance at the meeting received a free gift for attending the meeting."
Ex 2 (w/o redundancy): "Everyone at the meeting received a free gift."
See the difference? Not only is the second example easier to read, it’s easier to write. Don’t work harder than you have to 😂
Must-Read Articles
10 Copywriting Formulas to Turn Skimmers into Buyers (via Buffer)
Why I recommend it: I love a good copywriting framework to make structuring your message so much easier. This is a great list of frameworks (with examples!) for using in paids ads, emails, landing pages, Slack messages, and more. Bookmark this one!
Abandon Cart Emails: 12 Best Practices with Examples (via Klaviyo)
Why I recommend it: I love abandonment emails, and while we have pretty solid strategies for them at the agency, there are a few good tips and tricks in here to maximize their impact (especially when it comes to more robust personalization). Definitely worth a read.
The Zero Price Effect (via Stacked Marketer)
Why I recommend it: Price reductions? Good. Freebies? Better. At least, that’s what research (and probably your personal experience) tells us. There are a lot of ways we can easily package “free” in eComm to drive revenue and customer satisfaction. Read them here.
Pretty Fly Copy
AMERICAN GIANT
Format: Email
Why I like it: Like you, I received no less than 3,418 emails from brands over Memorial Day weekend, and this one stood out the most. I’ve shared AG’s emails before and they’re typically dead simple. Short text. Image. Maybe a snippet of social proof. This was a far departure from the norm. Story-based and heartfelt. I feel like they really captured the essence of why we ‘celebrate’ Memorial Day.
CORKCICLE
Format: Email
Why I like it: A fun, gift-centric email from Corkcicle. The subject line is a pain point many of us can relate to. But I liked the GIF that spells out “DAD” alongside a “gift guide highlights” section. They could’ve dropped the rest of the products at the bottom of the email. Makes it look clunky.
UPROOT
Format: Email
Why I like it: Another good Memorial Day email. The subject line surely stands out in the inbox, but I like the “10 reasons why” section of this plain text. They’re very on-brand, especially number 10.
IKEA
Format: Ad
Why I like it: I saw this on Evan Lee’s LinkedIn post and had to share. It’s simple and communicates immediately what everyone knows when you buy that damn Billie Book Case: assembly required.
