Contrast creates interest. (via Mark P. Jung)
Your marketing needs more contrast. Why?
→ Contrast creates interest
"Worn by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio"
This great headline from New Balance immediately hooked me.
Can you picture two more different groups? The contrast is vivid.
Humor and unexpected pairings are some of the best ways to do it.
Must-Read Articles
User Journey Maps: What They Are and How to Make Them (via Shopify)
Why I recommend it: My coworker (and insanely brilliant copywriter) Bailey Baethge recommended this to me last week, and I thought it was incredibly valuable. If you’ve asked me to write copy for you, then you know I ask you where your target audience is on the customer journey. And more likely than not, I want more detail than simply “top of funnel.” This article shows you how to create a resource for crafting more compelling and engaging messages for your target market.
The Psychology of Influencers (via the sustainable fashion forum)
Why I recommend it: Why are content creators so good at making us buy stuff? There are numerous factors at play, including parasocial interaction, social proof, and what I found particularly enlightening – aspirational identity. Read on to learn more…
Encourage Comparisons in Your Reviews (via Ariyh)
Why I recommend it: What’s more effective, a customer review praising a product or another that compares it with another? Answer: the second one. Instead of requiring your prospects to create an opinion, you’re giving them a vetted one, helping you control the narrative.
Podcast Pick of the Week 🎙️
DTC Podcast: Episode 400
The DadGang.co Story – From a boosted post, to 100k hats sold -- Bart Szaniewski Speaks!
Why I recommend it: Ever want to know how a popular brand gets born? This episode is for you. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at how a group of friends ran with a wild idea that took off. As a dad, I love it (of course). But also, I love how they’re building the brand around community more than a product. Listen in and drop your thoughts below!
Pretty Fly Copy
ALLTRAILS
Format: Email
Why I like it: I always love the subtle nudge of All Trails’ emails to get you out into nature. Their partnership announcement with Calm is good. They create desire, sharing how getting outdoors improves your mental health. Then they recommend trails near you to encourage you to go outside.
JETBLUE
Format: Flyer
Why I like it: Sometimes the best copy strategy is to ask a question and provide the answer. In jetBlue’s case, they answered by comparing and contrasting with popular customer pain points related to their onboard experiences.
REVIVV
Format: Ad
Why I like it:A great example of the PAS framework in play. One problem (balding). One defined audience (2 out of 3 men by age 35). One solution (stop it with Revivv).
OLUKAI
Format: Email
Why I like it:What’s trending? PICKLEBALL. And if you have a product (or category) that lends itself to what’s trending, you should highlight it! The copy here is simple. It’s less about the shoe and more about you wearing the shoe while doing something you love. Smart.
