Drop a Shocking Statistic
Did you know only 9% of all plastic waste EVER produced has been recycled?
(Happy Earth Day, anyone??)
But that’s just it – a surprising statistic can disrupt your target market’s doom-scrolling, evoke a specific emotion, and as a result, drive a particular response.
Shocking stats not only highlight core problems, but can also position your product as a solution, making what you say both relevant and urgent.
Must-Read Articles
Leverage the Psychology of the Ostrich Effect (via HTE)
Why I recommend it: Do you avoid bad news when you know it’s bad news? I do. It’s called the Ostrich Effect, and while it’s most common around financial situations, it can apply to marketing messages as well. The thing is, you might be using it to your disadvantage without realizing it…
Certainty vs. Uncertainty (via Nick Kolenda)
Why I recommend it: Do you want your messages to grab someone’s attention or hold their attention? How you frame it matters! It’s all in the art of creating and resolving tension.
Go BIG to Make Your Offer Look Sweet (via Charlene Burke)
Why I recommend it: It’s the perfect follow up to Nick’s article above. Have you heard of price anchoring? It’s a similar concept here. You create a high bar so the real ask doesn’t seem so bad. Charlene explains…
Podcast Pick of the Week 🎙️
Marketing People Love: How the Most Creative People Brainstorm Winning Ideas with Ashley Rutstein
Why I recommend it: Who doesn’t want to brainstorm more effectively? Ashley’s a seasoned creative director and copywriter who provides a glimpse into her creative process. One of my favorite parts of this episode was her distinction between insights and observations. Highly recommend this for anybody who has any kind of creative brainstorming process.
Pretty Fly Copy
OLUKAI
Format: Email
Why I like it: I love a good social proof email and this one is no exception. Sometimes the best thing you can say about your products are what customers are already saying. No sense in reinventing the wheel.
WARBY PARKER
Format: Email
Why I like it: The “rule of one” is in full effect with this one. One product. One problem addressed (and solved). One call to action (Shop the Frame). Warby Parker’s always good about this.
RUGGABLE
Format: Email
Why I like it: Why does this work? If you use Reminders on an iPhone, you likely recognize this “Reminder” banner. Their use of it in an email is a great way to stop the reader in their tracks. It’s one of those, “Hey, I recognize this but it’s out of place” tricks. Love the strategy as a sale reminder.
ANA LUISA
Format: Email
Why I like it: A good little Earth Day campaign. They did a great job communicating one of their guiding brand values while showcasing jewelry along the way. While the campaign won’t appeal to everybody, it certainly gets the attention of their ride-or-dies.
