Welcome to the 28th edition of the Weekly Round-Up — your once-a-week digest filled with copy tips/tricks/hacks, must-read articles, pretty cool copy examples, and much more!
In this week’s issue:
Copy Tip: Bookending
A Marketer’s Guide to a Cookieless World
Measuring (and Improving) the Success of Your Automations
The Con Man Who Sold the Eiffel Tower (TWICE)
Pretty Cool Copy Examples
Job Opportunities
Copy Tip of the Week
The Echo Close (Bookending)
Conclude by circling back to your introduction.
If you began with a personal story or question, refer back to it at the end.
“Remember the challenge I faced last year? Here’s how that story ends.”
“So how do you increase your dog’s quality of life? Feed her real food.”
This technique not only provides closure but also reinforces the main message of your content.
Must-Read Articles
A Marketer’s Guide to a Cookieless World (via Marketing Brew)
Why I recommend it: ICYMI, third-party cookies are on their way out the door, which might make some marketers squirm a little. But one person’s challenge is another person’s opportunity, I suppose. Marketing Brew suggests a “in context” and “out of context” strategy for targeting your ideal audience. And honestly, it fits well into email marketing strategy, too.
Measuring (and Improving) the Success of Your Marketing Automations (via Klaviyo)
Why I recommend it: One of the perks of email automations is that you can set them and forget them. But that’s the problem: too many people forget them. So how do you optimize your email flows and automations for maximum performance? It goes back to goal-setting (which this article talks about). I also enjoyed their recommended approach for not creeping your reader out.
The Con Man Who Sold the Eiffel Tower TWICE (via The Hustle)
Why I recommend it: You might be thinking, Matt, why in the hell would you recommend me an article from the Hustle? As copywriters, we talk a lot about the power of persuasion. In many ways, we do our best to be benevolent about it. However, there’s a darker force at play in some marketing efforts: manipulation. The intent is 100% self-serving (and malicious) and THAT’S what this article is about – it’s about what NOT to do.
Pretty Fly Copy
OTHERLAND
Format: Email
Why I like it: Great GIF in the hero. But what I like most about this email is it’s focused on ONE product – that’s it. Dead simple copy and well-executed in my opinion.
ALLTRAILS
Format: Email
Why I like it: They know their target audience and an important safety step when heading into the wilderness: tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back. This feature in their paid platform takes the stress out of planning too far in advance. Love how they spotlight 3 different types of ‘accountability buddies’ too.
TAYLOR STITCH
Format: Email
Why I like it: I liked the simplicity of the copy to this “guide” and the design too – tons of white space, which makes it easier to read. Also, the 3 shirts in the hero indicate the number of steps in their guide. Well done.
MUNCHERY
Format: Email
Why I like it: A dead-simple welcome email that reinforces the key value props: chef-crafted food, affordable dinners, monthly rewards, free 30-day trial. The CTA was great too (i.e. “See the Menu”).
