Must-Read Articles
The Anatomy of Addictive Content (via Sarah Sal)
Why I recommend it: As copywriters, whether we like it or not, we’re in the attention-grabbing business. I’m not one for clickbait, but neither is Sarah Sal, which is why her top tips for writing addictive content are rather enlightening. Put a few of these in play to keep eyeballs glued to your next email campaign.
Email Statistics Report for 2024 (via zero bounce)
Why I recommend it: A lot of what we do as email copywriters is dependent on subscribers’ inbox behavior. This report helps remove some of the mystery. Did you know 25% of folks never check their promotions tab, or 61% of people check email almost exclusively on their phone? Want to know what makes people open a brand email every single time? Read on.
7 Formulas for Landing Page Headlines that Practically Write Themselves (via unbounce)
Why I recommend it: Looking for some cool tips for writing better headlines? Emily Bauer over at unbounce has them all. This is a great resource (with examples) for churning out some real bangers. Use them in your subject lines, use them in your headers – they’re great headline-writing strategies.
Pretty Fly Copy
BRIGHTLAND
Format: Email
Why I like it: There’s good social proof layered in this email. Your fave minis have returned (again)... it’s a fan favorite… it’s sold out 3x… it has a waiting list of hundreds. Why would I want to miss out on something so popular?
RUGGABLE
Format: Email
Why I like it: Perhaps you notice I reference Ruggable’s emails a lot. It’s because they do so well at short-form attention-grabbing tactics. What stands out here is the slot-machine-style GIF. It plays ever so subtly to critical pieces of the scarcity loop: opportunity > unpredictable rewards. I mentioned it in yesterday’s Copywriter Column here.
HOWLER BROTHERS
Format: Email
Why I like it: One, I can attest to the fact that, yes, this is an incredible product. But also, I like how they explain what it is and then let the imagery do the rest of the talking. My only qualm: the massive block of text. More than 3 lines and my eyes glaze over.
