Copy Tip of the Week
This week’s copy tip comes from Cain Lewis, a freelance copywriter on LinkedIn.
Must-Read Articles
How to Use Emojis Effectively (via ariyh)
Why I recommend it: Can a well-positioned emoji make your copy more impactful? Surprisingly, yes. But it’s not just the emoji itself, but how it’s used. So thinking about tossing one in your subject line? Read this first.
Show 4 Options or Fewer in Choices (via Nick Kolenda)
Why I recommend it: I love Nick’s research-backed insights into improving copy, design, and overall marketing messaging. If you’re like me, you find yourself writing lists quite a bit. Turns out, our brains see them as 1, 2, 3, 4, lots.
The Lazy Writer’s Way to Success (via Eddie Schleyner)
Why I recommend it: Looking for a way to be more efficient with your creative work without sacrificing anything other than your stubbornness in the process? The secret lies in your ability to simply stop.
Pretty Fly Copy
UPROOT
Format: Email
Why I like it: What a wonderful (and humorous) play on the Valentine’s holiday. I love how a common pain point with having pets (excessive hair) is associated with something, shall we say, “seasonally relevant.” I also enjoyed the personification of their products!
REI
Format: Email
Why I like it: Typically, I’m underwhelmed by REI’s emails (which is unfortunate because I love their store). But I noticed a subtly here that most would overlook. Instead of framing their sale as “Buy more, save more,” as many of our clients have done in the past, they framed it as “Get more, save more.” It’s such a subtle change in the language, but it shifts the tone to be more benefit-led (you get and save).
HOLLOW
Format: Email
Why I like it: A great holiday-themed plain text campaign that was a beautiful blend of humor and gift-driven language. This little bit of persuasion was incredibly relatable to so many: “If your partner’s frigid toes have ever trespassed on your side of the bed, you know this isn’t just a good idea—it’s a great one.”
ALLTRAILS
Format: Email
Why I like it:The copy in the middle section of this email stood out to me. Why? It’s actionable – and those actions are tied to features associated with their product. “Stay close to home… Plan epic adventures… Get off the grid…”. It helps the reader imagine themselves using the product, which makes snagging that 50% discount offer easier to do.
