Copy Tip of the Week
Strategize like a spy.
I recently listened to an interview with Andrew Bustamante, a former CIA spy. He revealed there are numerous parallels between espionage recruitment operations and standard business marketing.
To recruit successfully, he says:
You just got to give them the right message, at the right time, to get them to take the right action, and then deliver the outcome.
Next time you sit down to write copy for your next project, make sure you know what all of those things are. You just might get the results you’re after.
Must-Read Articles
9 Types of Email Sequences to Ramp Up Conversions + Tips (via unlayer)
Why I recommend it:
Email sequences, flows, automations – whatever you call them – they’re a vital tool for helping brands nurture leads, secure purchases, and build long-lasting relationships. Aside from recommending key flows (er, “sequences”) to implement, the article provides a good 8-part framework for strategizing them out. There’s something here for beginners and experts alike.
How to Create Powerful Email CTAs [+30 Examples ] (via Omnisend)
Why I recommend it:
“What do you want the reader to do when they’re finished reading this?” It’s the question every copywriter must ask themself and why crafting an effective call-to-action (CTA) is so important. Your CTA can make or break your email’s performance. Whether you’re writing a designed email with traditional button copy or a plain text campaign with longer CTA text, you still have to ask yourself: Is this copy powerful enough to move my reader? This was a fantastic article offering both a high-level and detailed view of “How to Create Powerful Email CTAs.”
Addressing Buyer Objections | 1 Minute Conversion Copywriting Tip (via Eden Bidani, LinkedIn)
Why I recommend it:
Eden is a fellow copywriter and strategist writing primarily for SaaS and tech companies. She recently shared a wonderful post on LinkedIn about overcoming customer objections and addressed one that doesn’t get enough attention (but it’s a banger!). Be sure to give her a follow on LinkedIn too!
Pretty Fly Copy
FELLOW DROPS
Format: Email
Why I like it: Most people are familiar with workout routines – however, coffee novices likely aren’t too familiar with coffee routines. This is a great way to introduce their reader to the latter while showcasing their products. Extra kudos for matching the “new year, new you” theme that’s everywhere this month.
AMERICAN GIANT
Format: Email
Why I like it: It’s a fantastic example of the “rule of one” at play. They showcase one product, speak to one use for it (stands up substantially to the cold), and give you one CTA. I also liked the way the designer called out the value props in the header image as opposed to farther down in the email.
BRIGHTLAND
Format: Email
Why I like it: Sometimes promoting something that supports your product is just as effective as promoting the product itself. This email from Brightland does just that. ICYMI, they sell olive oils, vinegars, and honey, so this campaign offers tips for beautify-ing your kitchen. It’s a great way to add value to your readers while also reminding them that, “hey, we still exist.”
UPROOT
Format: Email
Why I like it: Subject line? Fantastic – you’ve already done work for me (how generous). Headline? The default response in my head is ‘yes,’ so I keep reading. The body copy? You make an incredibly compelling argument. Your button copy? HOLY KIT, I’M SOLD.
