Welcome to the 15th edition of the Weekly Round-Up — your once-a-week digest filled with copy tips/tricks/hacks, must-read articles, and some pretty cool copy examples.
It’s a busy week, so let’s jump right in!
Copy Tip of the Week
Eliminate the use of “that”.
How do you know if your sentence can function without it? Read it out loud.
If you can remove “that” and it still flows and makes sense, then delete it.
Here’s an example:
Did you know that there are eight monkeys jumping on the bed?

Must-Read Articles
Mobile Phones Are Most Popular Devices Used to Shop (Marketing Brew)
It’s reported more than three-quarters of consumers use their phones to shop. The most popular categories include apparel, accessories, and personal care products. What’s that mean for you as a copywriter? Use it to your advantage. Does your client have a mobile-friendly site? Write about it. Apple Pay at checkout? Worth mentioning. The options are endless.[VIDEO] How to Write About Your Features So People Will Care (Copyhackers)
The cardinal rule of copywriting: WRITE ABOUT THE BENEFITS! But maybe that’s not always the case. In this 20-minute video, Joanna Wiebe breaks down how to write about a product’s features in a more compelling way.Why and How to Use Loss Aversion in Email Marketing (MarTech)
Utilizing various psychological approaches in your email campaigns can feel a bit misleading in many ways. However, despite your feelings, it can also be an effective strategy when it matters. With BFCM season coming up, here’s how you might utilize loss aversion when it comes to those “biggest sales of the year.”
Pretty Fly Copy
DID YOU SEE THESE AWESOME COPY EXAMPLES?!?!!?
[Email] Coterie
While this functioned as a campaign, I thought it would make a great email for an abandonment flow. A fantastic way to demonstrate expert opinions in a Q&A format that simultaneously promotes your product.
[Email] American Giant
I liked the body copy and how it supported the headline. However, I think they missed an opportunity to better showcase their product. The imagery could’ve easily been shot to support the copy.
[SMS] HexClad
I have to admit, this strategy was Jacob Sappington’s idea. However, it was delivered (locally) right after work when someone might be actually running late for dinner. It’s a wonderful example of meeting someone where they’re at.

Nine words that do a whole lot of talking.
[Packaging] Ithaca Hummus (Jo Babb, Copywriter + Content Strategist, Homestead)
Here’s the text:
“We believe in feeding by example. That means doing things the right way, even if it's the hard way. We squeeze the lemons. We crush the garlic. And you get straight-out-of-the-blender freshness. So grab a carrot and taste hummus for the first time, even if it's your hundredth time."
Here’s what Jo thought about it:
This feels very up Brightland's alley [one of Jo’s clients]. Love the bit about tasting hummus for the first time, even if it's your hundredth. Really conveys that though this is a product you've experienced before, you've never experienced it like this.
[Email] Everlane (Bailey Baethge, Senior Copywriter + Content Strategist, Homestead)
I like how the copy went a layer beyond 'a gift for everyone on your list' messaging. Things speak to people when you don't try to speak to everyone all at once.
[Email] Kate Spade (Bailey Baethge, Senior Copywriter + Content Strategist, Homestead)
I love how they blended product photography and copy. This could be a fun thing to try for holiday campaigns...
[Email] East Olivia (Bailey Baethge, Senior Copywriter + Content Strategist, Homestead)
I thought this format was a cute way to deliver info-tainment!
