Weekly Round Up #13
Your once-a-week digest filled with copy tips/tricks/hacks, must-read articles, and some pretty cool copy examples.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
Last week, I said I would be sharing an update regarding changes to this newsletter as a whole, which included benefits for paid subscribers. I’ve put that on hold until a later date. Thank you for your understanding!
Welcome to the 13th edition of the Weekly Round-Up — your once-a-week digest filled with copy tips/tricks/hacks, must-read articles, and some pretty cool copy examples.
Let’s dive in.
Copy Tip of the Week
Keep things skimmable.
What would you enjoy more, 1 or 2?
Opening an email from your favorite skincare brand and seeing a MASSIVE BLOCK OF TEXT; or
Opening an email from your favorite skincare brand and seeing a short sentence and a few bullet points?
I think it’s safe to say 99.9% of us prefer option 2, not only as consumers but especially as copywriters.
Your readers’ eyes can be overwhelmed by too much on a page.
If you break your copy up and make it easy to skim, the chances of them reading through to the end and clicking the CTA are greater.
Who said designers were the only ones allowed to use white space? NOBODY, pal.
Keep things skimmable.
Must-Read Articles
Nothing to Ad (Seth Godin)
This one hits a little close to home, but it’s great fodder to think about. I liked this part the most:“People don’t talk about your product or service because you have a gimmick or hype or because they care about you or even because a thoughtful analysis shows that it has the best features and price performance. They talk about it because they believe it’s good for their status, their affiliation with people they care about or their frame of mind.”
Holiday Subject Line Word Cloud (Modern Marketing Blog)
Need a good subject line for those BFCM/holiday-related emails? This festive word cloud is designed to give your creative brain some inspiration. But don’t neglect what’s below it either, including best practices for making holiday subject lines that’ll stand out.50 Impactful CTA Examples and How to Optimize Them for Conversion (Newsletter Glue)
While this article could seem basic to a more seasoned copywriter, it offers some excellent tips (and examples) for creating effective CTA button copy. As an email copywriter, it challenged me to think more strategically before I simply write “Shop Now” because it’s the easy solution.
Pretty Fly Copy
From my inbox to yours, here’s the copy that caught my eye this week:
[Email] English Elm
A dead-simple sale email that says NOTHING about what the sale or discounted prices are — just that there is a sale and I need to log in to view it. Kinda brilliant, tbh.
[Email] Olukai
Need to drive up your CTR? This email gives readers a lot of buttons to click. It’s also a brilliant way to gather zero-party data on your customers. A pretty smooth move for apparel brands if you ask me.
[Ad] Loctite Superglue
There are two words in this entire ad. The design/image does the rest of the talking. Sometimes less is more. Also, if you don’t LOL when you see this…
[Email] Coterie
You know what makes me mad about this email? That I didn’t think of it. What a brilliant way to feature customers who use your product.
