Do you ever have weeks that just snowball out of control?
That was this week for me both professionally and personally.
At the agency, we work a month ahead. So starting the first week of July, for example, we begin working on the August campaigns for all our clients.
By the end of July, everything is completely concepted, written, designed, and prepped for implementation in August.
Pretty cool, huh? Only when it works out that way.
This week brought a string of last-minute campaign requests, flow requests, product delays, and more — all requiring immediate attention.
In other words, urgency pushed August campaign priorities right out the window and onto the pavement below.
This isn’t the first time it’s happened.
I’ve learned the best course of action is to roll with the punches, to do one thing at a time, and to not get overwhelmed by the “urgent” next steps.
This strategy played well in my personal life this week, too.
My wife made a necessary 3-hour road trip to her parents to pick up some items we left there. The challenge is that it left me with our 6-month-old all by myself for a night.
So while working on all these urgent tasks, I had the privilege of keeping my eyes on little boy too (which I really do enjoy, by the way).
Things couldn’t have gone more wrong.
Homeslice is teething, so his attitude was next-level demonic in nature. For 4 hours, he tormented me with his… behavior.. until I put him to bed.
Then, exactly one hour later, the power went out from a flash storm.
The problem?
It’s been 100ºF outside every day this week. We needed A/C, not so much for me, but for little man.
So, in his kindness, her uncle made the late-night-trek to pick up Pax, our dog, and myself to stay at his place for the night.
Rolling with the punches.
All that to say, life will never be perfect. I get that.
But instead of allowing yourself to get overwhelmed by everything going on, take a step back, breathe, and stop fighting the current.
Ultimately, it’ll take you where you need to go. It just may not be how you want to get there.
