A friend texted me last week and congratulated me on writing 99 issues of the Copywriter Column. And immediately, I felt a knot in my stomach…
That would make this the 100th issue. Shouldn’t I have some piece of profound wisdom to share?
Well, no.
For nearly two years, I’ve been writing a weekly newsletter (with a few pre-planned absences) to a growing list of subscribers with the same goal everytime I sit down to write: get something on paper, get it shipped.
This is still the goal.
This will always be the goal.
There is no content calendar.
There is no method to the madness.
There is no secret list of copywriting topics stashed away in a safety deposit box.
I literally sit down, open a running doc, and start writing what comes to my mind. It’s a practice in the “art of showing up.”
As a writer, publishing anything is scary as hell, let alone when it’s your random thoughts. But it takes practice to break yourself free from the fear of OMG-WHAT-WILL-OTHER-PEOPLE-THINK-ITIS.
So if you’re sitting there thinking, geez, I’ll never be able to do that… just sit down, write something, and ship it.
Who knows, maybe two years later you’ll have a few hundred subscribers who read what you write too.
That said, here are a few of my favorite issues of the Copywriter Column from the past several months:
< raises glass > Here’s to 100 more!
P.S. Like what you read? Please comment and share this post on LinkedIn. It’s an easy way to support my work and goes a long way! You can also repost it on Substack.
The Copywriter Column is a weekly glimpse into the mind of an agency copywriter. Thinking about subscribing? Here’s what else you can expect.
