“You gonna do it?”
“That?” I asked, pointing at the rope swing hanging valiantly in front of a waterfall.
I shook my head.
“Why not?”
“It’s not my thing. Plus, I just put on sunscreen.”
I watched as my wife then beamed with joy while letting go of the rope, splashing into the water below.
We were in Jamaica with two of our favorite friends, and for whatever reason, I decided it wasn’t in my best interest to live a little.
“It’s not my thing” is the worst excuse in the book for letting fear dictate my experience of the unknown or unexpected.
Good stories aren’t written when a character shuts things down by saying “It’s not my thing.” Good stories are written when the protagonist says, “I’ll try anything once!”
ICYMI, today is Leap Day.
Every four years, we get an additional 24 hours to try again, to do something new, to create an experience worth writing about.
And I don’t know about you, but the next opportunity I get to hop on a rope in front of a waterfall, I’m taking it.
