Comparison.
Everybody does it and unfortunately, some of us are more skilled at it than others.
Maybe you’re scrolling Instagram when so-and-so’s reel from Bali catches your eye. You think “Why isn’t that me galvanting in the ocean?!”
Or maybe you’re flipping through the other 127 newsletters in your inbox and wondering why you didn’t make $10K last month like that other freelancer WHO DOES THE EXACT SAME THING AS YOU.
No doubt, we’ve all been there.
Hell, I’ve been there a few thousand times.
I lovingly refer to it as a flare-up of comparison-itis.
Comparison-itis is essentially an inflammation of the ego that thrives on insecurity, feeding off of the fear that you’re just not enough.
Sound familiar?
But here’s the kicker: when you measure your worth against someone else’s highlight reel, you aren't just doing yourself a disservice – you’re undermining the unique blend of talents and perspectives that only you can offer the world.
(Read that again, friend.)
In the world of copywriting, falling victim to comparison-itis can stifle creativity quicker than an anonymous platypus wandering into a blank Google Doc. It blinds us to our originality.
We each have a voice that can resonate in ways no one else's can. When we wish to be like others, aren’t we just wishing away our distinctiveness?
So, how do we treat this condition? First, recognize the symptoms. Are you downplaying your successes? Are you feeling paralyzed by the idea that you’re not where you “should” be? That’s the comparison creeping in.
Here’s some advice:
Acknowledge Your Achievements
Keep a journal. Every time you complete a project, jot it down and make a plan to reflect on your successes regularly.Limit Your Exposure
Reduce the time you spend looking at what could make you feel inadequate. That might mean less time on social media or skipping that webinar on 'how to get 1,547,311 new followers in 7 days.’Celebrate What Makes You Different
When you find yourself comparing, switch gears. Think about something you do that is uniquely yours – a project you loved, feedback that made you smile, or even your quirky work ritual.
Be good at what you’re good at.
Embrace it.
Polish it.
Flaunt it.
Your authentic self is your greatest asset, and no amount of comparison can replicate the magic you bring to the table.
